How it works
MET Method (With Pace)
When you provide a pace, the calculator looks up its Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) value from the ACSM Compendium of Physical Activities — a standardised measure of exercise intensity as a multiple of resting metabolism. Slow jogging at 10 min/km carries a MET around 6; hard running below 4 min/km pushes toward 16. The formula is: calories = MET × body weight (kg) × duration (hours). Because MET captures intensity per unit of time, this method correctly reflects that faster runners burn more calories per minute — even if the per-kilometre difference is smaller than you might expect.
Distance Rule (Without Pace)
The simpler estimate uses 1.036 kcal per kilogram per kilometre — the average metabolic cost of level-surface running across recreational speeds. For most runners between 5:00 and 8:00 per kilometre this is accurate to within roughly 10%. Quick rule of thumb: a 70 kg runner burns about 70–75 kcal per kilometre.

Carbohydrate and Fat Breakdown
At moderate running intensity the body draws from approximately 60% carbohydrate and 40% fat. The calculator converts the calorie total into grams using standard fuel densities (4 kcal/g for carbs, 9 kcal/g for fat). These ratios shift with intensity — easy running burns proportionally more fat; threshold and interval efforts rely more heavily on glycogen — so treat the breakdown as a moderate-intensity approximation. A practical use for the carbohydrate figure: most runners store roughly 400–500 g of glycogen (~1,600–2,000 kcal), enough for about 25–30 km at marathon pace. If the calculator shows you'll burn 200 g of carbs but you're only carrying two gels (~50 g), there's a fuelling gap worth planning for.
