What does sub-3 actually take?

Cross the finish line at any big-city marathon and only about 1 in 22 runners (roughly 4.5% of finishers, closer to 1 in 38 once weighted for the female field) broke three hours. It's not an arbitrary round number — it's a measurable sub-elite standard. VO2max is the engine, lactate threshold is the redline, and running economy is the fuel efficiency. All three have to line up.

One twist from the research: raw VO2max and the percentage of it used at threshold don't reliably separate the fastest sub-3 marathoners from the slowest. What does is your absolute lactate-threshold pace — plus training frequency and training speed. Chasing a bigger engine on paper matters less than banking faster threshold miles.
